Water is a natural appetite suppressant. The part of your brain that controls your appetite is called the hypothalamus. The control center for thirst is located very near the same area and can overlap. This can cause a person to feel that he or she is hungry when, in reality, it is thirst that is felt. So it follows that drinking fluids can reduce that hungry feeling. Just drinking a small glass of water can reduce those nighttime cravings for many people.
Water is a crucial element of the processes that enable muscles to contract. So, water helps to preserve muscle tone. The better your muscle tone, the healthier and better looking those muscles are.
Fluids are also important in the prevention of the droopy skin that accompanies a lot of weight loss. It fills out the skin cells and gives the skin a healthier and younger look. Fatique is also a common symptom of dehydration because the body's metabolism slows down. This happens a lot with dieters because they tend to restrict not just food, but liquids as well. This will cause a person to feel even more hungry and tired. This does not help dieters because their bodies are telling them to eat, eat, eat!
Once your body is rehydrated, you arrive at the "breakthrough point." This is a concept discovered by Dr. Peter Lindner, an obesity expert from California. Once you reach the breakthrough point, your water retention lowers, the liver and endocrine system operates more effectively and your body returns to its more natural hunger and thirst levels.
So, how can you tell if you are drinking enough water?
First, if your urine is a dark yellow or gold, you are definitely not getting enough fluids into your body. Urine should be a very pale yellow in color. Some vitamins and medicines can affect the color so take that into account as well.
Drink water throughout the day even if you aren't feeling particularly thirsty. Once you are feeling thirsty, that means your body has start the dehydration process. It is usually recommended that an adult drink at least eight (8 ounce) glasses of water throughout the day. That amount should be increased during hot weather or during exercise workouts. If you are overweight, your body will require even more water, one glass for every 25 pounds of weight over the normal weight.
